This photograph shows the scene inside one of the wards at Rhyl Hospital, c. 1917. Several soldiers who had been injured during the First World War were treated at the hospital. As the decorations in the room clearly show, this photograph was taken at Christmas time.

Many traditional activities carried on despite the war, especially in rural areas that did not live with the constant fear of air attacks. In 1940 a leap year party was held at Llanbrynmair village hall where these women took part in an apple eating competition.

Children and young people had their own roles and duties alongside adults in the effort on the home front. They were often encouraged to help out with various activities. In this sewing class in a Newtown school in 1939, the girls are making covers for their gas masks. School children were constantly drilled in the care of their gasmasks and their proper use.
